Initially, presentations will be given by group members, though we will also explore the potential for other sources of input, including visiting places of interest.
Our aim is to provide a forum to discuss all manner of military history, whether land, sea or air, whether ancient or modern. The potential for subjects is immense and will include battles and other military events, strategy and tactics, weapons and personages, as well as subjects and events relating to personal or family military history.
Meeting location is yet to be determined and in part will depend on our number of members.
The following subjects, put forward by the founder members, highlight the wide range of topics that we could initially be exploring:
- Ancient battles –
- Cannae 216BC
- Gaugamela 331BC
- Thermopylae 480BC
- English Civil War –
- Outbreak
- Naseby
- Hundred Years War –
- Agincourt 1415
- Napoleonic Wars –
- Nelson
- Russian campaign
- Sir John Moore/Corunna
- Waterloo
- WWI –
- Battlefields
- Bombardment of East Coast towns in 1914
- WWII –
- Channel Dash 1942
- El Alamein
- “Operation Sealion” - plans for attacks on St Mary’s Bay
- Weapons – Cruisers
Selection of all future subjects will be decided by group members, but any Shepway U3A member is welcome to suggest an item for discussion.
If you would like to join the group or attend one of the presentations, as a trial, please contact the Shepway Groups Registrar, using the Contact link above, who will put you in touch with Mike Kirk, the Group Leader.
