In this group we are on a voyage of discovery of all the splendours, and forms, of poetry, from Beowulf to Carol Ann Duffy!

One of the advantages of U3A form of study is that no pressure is involved. There are no exams and no deadlines. We have left the drab world of work behind and are free to wander at our own pace through the flowery meadows of Poesy stopping as long as we like to admire a particular blossom.

We regularly choose new poets or themes for discussion. Usually, members will each bring a relevant poem (with copies) to introduce and read to the Group. We then discuss the poem together to bring out the meanings and full enjoyment of each piece.

Occasionally we will discuss one long poem, having first listened to it on a CD or tape. In this way we have encountered Coleridge’s “Ancient Mariner” and Crabbe’s “Peter Grimes” among others.

Of course, poems are more than disembodied voices. They are the creations of frail human beings, and we also pay attention to the individual behind the poem.

Members need not attend every meeting, but please notify me if you are not coming.

Anyone is welcome, whether already knowledgeable or otherwise. We are a sociable Group and most people like to join in the discussions. We try not to be too deadly serious, but to follow the U3A maxim: “Learn, laugh, live”.

We meet twice a month all through the year.
