Groups

U3A subject groups are self-organising, and meet on a regular basis in various venues, including members' own homes. They each have a leader, who may or may not be an expert in the subject to be studied, but who is willing to do some of the organisation.

Meetings may take place weekly, twice monthly or monthly, depending on the subject and members' preferences, with normal breaks for Christmas and other holidays. Some Groups also take a break during the summer for one, or sometimes two, months.

We ask 30p for tea and coffee when meeting in a member's house. There will be a nominal cost for indoor meetings held in a public hall. This varies depending on the group's requirements, but is normally £1:00 for the premises that we use at the moment.

A contribution may be made towards other members' petrol costs when cars are shared.

Please remember to keep in touch with the Group Leader about meetings and let the Leader know if you are going to be absent.

If you wish to join any of our groups, please contact the Groups Registrar using this link: Click: Joining Groups & Enquiries. Please remember to include your Membership Number - which you will find at the top of any email from the Committee.

You will then be advised whether places are available and given some details about the group. Your name will be passed to the group leader, who will contact you and make arrangements for you to join. If there are no places at the present time, your name will be added to the waiting list, and you will be advised when a vacancy arises.

Note: to join any of these groups, you must be a paid up member of the Shepway & District U3A. This is an insurance requirement as we are affiliated to the Third Age Trust.

Job Opportunity
Group Coordinator – new groups and other sites
We are looking for someone with organisational skills to take over from Christine to assist people wanting to start new groups, and to support existing leaders of groups that do not meet in the Tin Tabernacle. Some of these groups meet in members’ homes and some in hired venues.
The role involves helping leaders with organising the group, finding and liaising with venues as need be, health and safety requirements, using the Beacon system, and encouraging the group leaders to do the same in order to keep group records up to date.
Christine Hughes has done the job for three years and feels the time has come for someone else to take it on. Initially Christine will be happy to give advice and the two other Group Coordinators David Warren and Roger Wood will be available for ongoing support.
